How to Choose the Best Shampoo Bar for Your Hair Type
If you’ve tried a shampoo bar before and it did not meet your expectations l understand.
For years, my own experience with solid shampoo made me skeptical. Some left hair feeling coated. Others created that unmistakable dry, squeaky feeling that makes you want to reach immediately for a bottle of conditioner.
So when I was first asked about creating waterless shampoo bars for Tea-Licious, my response wasn’t an enthusiastic yes.
I wanted to know something first:
Could we make a solid concentrated shampoo that actually competed with the best of them?
We used the same principle that extends beyond hair care. Our waterless solid skincare is also designed around concentration rather than carrying unnecessary water inside the product.
That became the starting point.
And it also led us to an important realization: there shouldn’t be one shampoo bar for everyone.
The Best Shampoo Bar Depends on Your Hair
Choosing a shampoo bar is much like choosing liquid shampoo. Your scalp, hair texture and how quickly your hair becomes oily all matter.
A person with fine hair that becomes weighed down easily does not necessarily need the same formula as someone with curls that need additional softness and manageability.
That is why we created four different Tea-Licious shampoo bars rather than one universal formula.
Here’s how to find yours.
Best Shampoo Bar for Fine or Thin Hair
Fine hair can become flat surprisingly quickly, particularly when a shampoo or conditioner leaves too much behind.
For fine or thin hair, look for a shampoo that cleans thoroughly while keeping the finished feel light.
Our Green Tea & Rice Protein Shampoo Bar was developed specifically with this in mind.
Hydrolyzed rice protein helps support a fuller, smoother hair feel, while the formula produces a creamy, lightweight lather without loading the hair with heavy conditioning ingredients.
Best for: Fine or thin hair
After rinsing: Clean, light and manageable
Tea pairing: Green tea
If your hair is very fine, use conditioner primarily through the mid-lengths and ends rather than at the roots.
Best Shampoo Bar for Oily Hair and Scalp
An oily scalp needs effective cleansing—but that doesn’t mean hair should be scrubbed until it feels stripped.
That harsh, squeaky feeling isn’t the goal.
Our Black Tea Shampoo Bar was formulated for roots that become oily or weighed down between washes. Kaolin helps absorb surface oil while the cleansing system removes oil and buildup and rinses cleanly.
The goal is simple: fresher roots without turning the lengths of your hair into straw.
Best for: Oily scalp, oily roots and buildup
After rinsing: Fresh and clean without a harsh stripped feel
Tea pairing: Black tea
If your scalp becomes oily while your ends remain dry, concentrate shampoo primarily around the scalp and use conditioner through the lengths and ends.
Best Shampoo Bar for Wavy or Curly Hair
Waves and curls often tell you very quickly when they dislike a shampoo.
They can lose softness, feel rough or become considerably more difficult to detangle.
Our Hibiscus Tea & Silk Protein Shampoo Bar was developed for wavy, curly and textured hair with softness and manageability in mind.
Silk protein helps form a light film along the hair, while cupuaçu and murumuru butters contribute conditioning and softness.
The result is cleansing without forgetting what curls need after the rinse.
Best for: Wavy, curly and textured hair
After rinsing: Soft, manageable and ready for conditioning
Tea pairing: Hibiscus tea
Pair it with a matching conditioner bar that provides good slip through the lengths so you’re not fighting knots after washing.
Best Shampoo Bar for Normal Hair
Sometimes hair isn’t particularly oily, dry, fine or curly.
It simply needs to be washed.
That sounds obvious, but I think normal hair is sometimes overlooked while brands concentrate on solving increasingly specific problems.
Our White Tea & Panthenol Shampoo Bar is our balanced everyday option.
It produces a rich, creamy lather and removes normal oil and buildup without leaving hair feeling overly dry. Panthenol supports softness and shine, while jojoba helps maintain flexibility.
Best for: Normal hair and regular washing
After rinsing: Fresh, soft, smooth and manageable
Tea pairing: White tea
Pair it with a matching conditioner bar that provides good slip through the lengths so you’re not fighting knots after washing.
Shampoo Bar vs. Soap Bar: They Aren’t the Same Thing
This distinction matters.
A modern solid shampoo does not have to be a traditional soap molded into a bar.
Tea-Licious shampoo bars use Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) as the primary cleansing ingredient. SCI is a surfactant used to cleanse hair and create the creamy lather you expect from shampoo.
In other words, the solid format doesn’t mean you should have to accept a waxy coating, poor lather or soap-like after-feel.
A well-formulated shampoo bar should still do the fundamental job of shampoo:
clean the scalp and hair well, rinse cleanly and leave the hair appropriate for its type.
How to Use a Shampoo Bar
Using one is remarkably simple.
Wet your hair thoroughly and briefly wet the shampoo bar. Rub the bar between your wet hands to build a creamy lather, then massage that lather through the scalp and roots.
Rinse thoroughly.
Follow with your matching conditioner bar through the mid-lengths and ends as needed.
One final detail makes a significant difference: allow your bars to dry between uses.
Place them on a draining bamboo rack or soap dish rather than leaving them sitting in water. A concentrated solid bar will last considerably longer when it can dry properly.
So, Which Shampoo Bar Should I Choose?
Start with what your hair actually does—not which ingredient sounds the most fashionable.
Fine or thin hair: Green Tea & Rice Protein
Oily scalp or roots: Black Tea
Wavy, curly or textured hair: Hibiscus Tea & Silk Protein
Normal hair: White Tea & Panthenol
Tea is part of our story and always will be.
But I didn’t want to create four pretty shampoo bars and simply add four different teas to them.
The hair had to come first.
Each formula needed its own reason for existing—its own cleansing level, after-rinse feel and purpose.
Because the best shampoo bar isn’t necessarily the one with the longest ingredient list.
It’s the one your hair is happy to use again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a shampoo bar and a bar of soap?
Traditional soap bars use saponified oils, which have an alkaline pH that can leave hair feeling waxy, coated, or rough. Tea-Licious shampoo bars are formulated with gentle surfactants like Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI). They clean like high-end liquid shampoo, lather richly, and rinse away cleanly without soap residue.
How do I choose the best shampoo bar for my hair type?
Select a bar based on your scalp's oil level and your hair's texture rather than a single trending ingredient:
Fine or Thin Hair: Choose the Green Tea & Rice Protein Shampoo Bar for lightweight body and clean fullness without heavy residues.
Oily Scalp or Buildup: Opt for the Black Tea Shampoo Bar, formulated with kaolin clay to lift excess sebum without stripping ends.
Wavy, Curly, or Textured Hair: Use the Hibiscus Tea & Silk Protein Shampoo Bar with murumuru and cupuaçu butters for slip and detangling ease.
Normal Hair: Pick the White Tea & Panthenol Shampoo Bar for everyday balance, shine, and softness.
Will a shampoo bar leave a waxy buildup or dry feeling in my hair?
No. Waxy residue typically comes from true soap-based bars. Because our bars use concentrated, pH-balanced solid surfactants (SCI) paired with targeted tea infusions and botanical conditioners, they rinse out thoroughly, leaving hair soft and residue-free.
How do you properly use and lather a solid shampoo bar?
Thoroughly wet your hair and wet the bar briefly. Rub the bar between wet hands to work up a rich, creamy lather, then massage that lather directly into your scalp and roots. Rinse clean, then follow with a solid conditioner bar through your mid-lengths and ends.
How long does a shampoo bar last, and how should it be stored?
A concentrated shampoo bar can last for dozens of washes, replacing multiple liquid bottles. To maximize its lifespan, store the bar on a well-draining rack or soap dish away from direct water streams between uses so it can fully dry out.
Can I use a shampoo bar if I have an oily scalp but dry ends?
Yes. Use the Black Tea Shampoo Bar directly at the scalp to cleanse excess oil and buildup, and finish with conditioner applied strictly through the mid-lengths and dry ends.
